At Asda mobile, powered by Vodafone, we will be saying goodbye to our 3G network in phases throughout 2023 so we can focus on better connections with 4G and 5G services.
We’ve already switched off 3G in Plymouth and Basingstoke during February 2023.
We’ll share more information about our plans for the rest of the UK soon.
There are some simple steps you can take to make saying goodbye to 3G easier.
Setting up 4G calling means you get to enjoy clearer calls by using your phone’s 4G data.
If your phone isn’t compatible with 4G or Wi-Fi calling, you could consider upgrading! Check out our range of compatible devices online or in store.
We’ll be here to help you every step of the way! Check out our handy FAQs below. Our Customer Services team can also talk you through your options.
4G and more recently 5G technologies have introduced many benefits over 3G, such as faster internet speeds and improved call quality.
Wi-Fi calling is also usable and allows you to make and receive calls and texts in any location you are connected to a Wi-Fi network, even if there’s no regular phone signal.
Check your network coverage to see if you can benefit from 4G or 5G.
Check out our great range of 4G and 5G handsets (there is no need to change your SIM).
Once 3G has been switched off, we’ll be able to use that part of the network to boost the speed and capacity of both 4G and 5G – so you’ll enjoy faster and more reliable connections.
If you haven’t moved over to 4G or 5G when 3G is switched off, and you have a 3G phone, you’ll be switched over to our 2G network.
You’ll still be able to send texts and make calls, but you’ll get a better connection by switching to a 4G or 5G phone.
If you explain your needs to a member of our dedicated Customer Service staff, they’ll be on-hand to assist you.
At the same time, our accessiBe feature is available on-site to make finding the right information easier.
Check our range of handsets from as little as £25 here.
Right now, 4G and 5G networks offer the best connectivity for mobile customers. This includes:
Lots of improvements have already been made in these areas ready for 4G and indoor 4G coverage has been boosted to over 99%, making it even easier to get better connections.
If the switch-off impacts you, we’ll be in touch with more information on how to stay connected.
Yes. From early 2023, the UK government will be launching a new emergency alerts service that runs on all 4G and 5G networks within the UK. Any phones or tablets connected to 2G or 3G will not receive these alerts.

Wi-Fi Calling lets you make and receive calls and text messages anywhere you are connected to a Wi-Fi network, even if there is no mobile network signal. This is great if you have Wi-Fi in your house but the mobile network coverage is not great.
To enjoy Wi-Fi calling, you will need a compatible phone with up-to-date software downloaded. You can make sure you have the latest version by asking the manufacturer and/or your mobile retailer directly.
