The BBC iPlayer app was the usual way to access BBC content, but in the wake of so much digital content, including the rise in popularity of podcasts, the broadcaster has moved on with something new. The new BBC Sounds app is a free app with a fresh new look and a quick and easy way to access a vast library of content. This latest version is aimed to attract listener’s of all ages and replaces the BBC iPlayer app.
BBC Sounds App Features
Some of the design elements of the iPlayer have remained in the new BBC Sounds app. You will notice the familiar virtual tuning dial for accessing radio shows. As this was a hugely popular feature of the old version, it is good to see that this is in the new app.
A clean and fresh design with a simple white and orange colour scheme and swipeable tiles make the new BBC Sounds App easy to navigate. You will be able to easily find your favourite podcasts, music, and radio stations when using the app.
Some of the BBC Sounds App features include:
- Pause and rewind live radio
- Listen to UK BBC Radio stations live
- Autoplay multiple podcast episodes or series
- Daily Discovery – explore the best bits from across the BBC
- Personalised recommendations
- Subscribe to podcasts, programmes, and mixes
- Discover new podcasts
- Enjoy new music mixes
Access all UK BBC Radio stations live, and you can continue listening from where you left off on any device. A list of new episodes from your favourite podcasts and programmes are compiled into a handy list. The app will track which shows, artists, and podcasts you have been listening to so you get personalised recommendations. What's more, the app is rated 5 stars on the Apple Store!
BBC Sounds App Updates
When the app first launched, users were only able to access and stream live shows. Due to the rise in popularity of listening offline, an update now allows you to download your shows onto your device. A handy feature if you are at home with an unlimited internet connection and want to load up your phone with shows and podcasts to listen to during your commute.
A recent update has improved the radio listening feature with the option to pause while listening to a live show. You can rewind and listen again to part of the live broadcast and continue from there or jump back to the live streaming of the radio programme.
With a massive collection of content including music mixes from top BBC DJ’s, regional and national radio programmes, and seemingly endless podcast choices, there is something for everyone to enjoy on the new BBC Sounds App. A recent announcement from the broadcaster has stated that they are now working to open up the app to content from other companies too, giving listeners even more choice.
