Which Huawei phone should I get?

Huawei are now better than they’ve ever been with some of the best premium smartphones, challenging other top brands such as Apple, Samsung and LG. In fact, in 2017 Huawei sales overtook that of Apple iPhones.

Huawei is China’s leading phone maker with lots of different flagship phones and using the android operating system. There are lots of Huawei phones to choose from, so whatever your budget you should find the perfect phone for you. Here are our lower end, mid-range and top-range Huawei phones.

The Best Lower End Huawei - P Smart

The Best Mid-Range Huawei - P30 Lite

The Best Top-Range Huawei - P30 Pro

The Best Lower End Huawei - P Smart

The Huawei P Smart (2019) is the best Huawei phone within this price range at £199. There are lots of exciting features packed in this budget smartphone.

Pros Cons
Great camera for the price Plastic back casing
Affordable Poor speaker placement

Key Features

The phone is touchscreen, with modern rounded corners and runs the latest version of Android Pie. There are lots of exciting features such as fingerprint sensor, headphone jack and a 13MP camera which includes bokeh imagery and smart beauty.

Display & Screen

The touchscreen display looks like the Xiaomi’s latest phones - which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The phone is simple and modern; however, we think that the plastic back lets the design down and gives it a less premium feel. The Huawei P has a 6.21-inch IPS LCD quality display. The display is equipped with a HD panel.

Performance

The Huawei Mate 20 Lite comes with an RRP of £380, for almost half that price the 2019 P Smart brings the same Kirin 710 processor to the table. Despite being paired with only 3GB of RAM (a relatively paltry amount for an Android phone in 2019), it’s perfectly well-equipped for your everyday smartphone needs.

Camera

The P Smart camera is fantastic value for money. On the front there is a 13MP + 2MP dual camera and on the back is an 8MP selfie camera featuring ‘smart beauty’, which helps you always look your best. Not only this, but the camera can also take bokeh (blurred background) images.

Battery & Storage

The battery is decent for a phone of its size (3,400mAh battery for a 6-inch phone). This phone will easily last a day and maybe a bit longer. Memory comes in at 64GB with the option to add some more using the Micro SD card slot.

The Best Mid-Range Huawei - P30 Lite

The Huawei P30 Lite is the best Huawei phone for under £400 (£299 retail price). This ‘Lite’ version of their P30 Pro is a hit, at over half the price Huawei has taken the P30’s best features such as its attention-grabbing design and sharp screen.

Pros

Cons

Perfect design and great camera

Battery Life

Fast Charging

Mono Speaker

Key Features

The display is big, bright and sharp; however, it doesn’t have the AMOLED screen, but still works perfectly with an LTPS LCD panel. The P30 Lite has a triple camera which is impressive for a sub £300 phone. Enjoy music? You can relax, as this phone includes a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Display & Screen

The touchscreen display has a large 6.15-inch screen with 1080 x 2312 resolution, which is great considering the price. The quality is similar to that of the Huawei P30 Pro - but without the super expensive AMOLED screen. The smartphones design is elegant and slim with a rear fingerprint scanner; the phone looks great and feels solid.

Performance

Using Android 9 Pie software the P30 Lite has all the latest features including battery saving, app management and security updates. There’s not much lag when it comes to multitasking or gaming, basic 2D and 3D games should run smoothly using Huawei’s own HiSilicon Kirin 710 chipset.

Camera

The P30 Lite’s camera packs a punch with a 48MP primary camera, one 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 2MP depth sensor camera. The triple camera creates impressive good quality photos. One drawback is that the P30 Lite doesn’t support 4K Video technology (like the P30 Pro) however, you can’t have everything!

The front camera offers plenty of customisation settings such as (bokeh) blurred backgrounds and beauty modes for flattering selfies.

Battery & Storage

The Huawei P30 Lite has a decent battery at 3,340mAh, however it’s not the best. To make up for this Huawei have included various battery saving tools that switch off background apps and let you know what’s eating up most of your battery.

The Huawei P30 Lite has ample storage with 128GB onboard storage with the capacity to increase this further by inserting a Micro SD card (which also doubles up as a dual-SIM card slot).

The Best Top-Range Huawei - P30 Pro

The Huawei P30 Pro is one of the best phones currently on the market, competing with the new Apple XS and the Samsung Galaxy 10. You can buy a 128GB model for £899 (still £200 cheaper than the Apple XS Max).

Pros

Cons

Powerful Camera

No Headphone Jack

Excellent Battery Life

Key Features

The P30 Pro has set a whole new standard for the entire mobile phone market. The phone is relatively inexpensive, yet it packs so many flagship features such as a fantastic camera, great battery, large screen, wireless charging capabilities, built-in fingerprint scanner and more...

Display & Screen

The Huawei P30 Pro has a 6.47-inch OLED display, with 1080 x 2340 resolution and 398ppi. In non-technical jargon this means that the screen is bright, colourful and clear. There is a fingerprint scanner built into the display, which is perfectly curved and feels stylish.

Performance

The P30 has a Kiran 980 chipset and 8GB of RAM, meaning it is capable of any mobile app, and will swiftly load graphically demanding games. You won’t notice much lag on this device.

Camera

There are four rear cameras including a 40MP main camera, 8MP telephoto camera, 20MP wide angle camera, ToF (time-of-flight) depth sensing camera and finally on the front a 32MP selfie camera. The camera has great low-light performance and zoom. Huawei has been in partnership with high end camera makers for many years now - and it shows in this device. The camera interface is equally impressive with plenty of different optimisation options, controls and filters.

Battery & Storage

In short, the battery life is excellent. The P30 Pro packs a 4,200mAh battery which is larger than most of its rivals, this means you can last a day and a half on a full charge. To put this into perspective most devices of this size and power only last a day at the most, battery life like this is difficult to find. Depending on where you live, you can buy the P30 Pro in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB models. To expand the memory, you can use a Nano SD card for an additional 256GB.

Google and Huawei

Google recently blocked Huawei’s future access to Android updates in 2018. Whilst Huawei have patented their own OS as a precautionary measure, the future of Huawei is still uncertain. However, Google have promised to support Huawei phones currently on the market.
