How much storage do I really need on my phone?

When looking for your next mobile phone, it can be hard to establish exactly how much storage data you need. Some smartphones have extra storage space added with the use of a micro SD, however other handsets can’t be expanded. With this in mind, it is important you make the right choice before purchasing your next mobile phone.

Most smartphones have one of the following internal storage options: 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB or 512GB.

The best way to decide the storage needed is by knowing your needs - “Do you take endless selfies?”, “do you like to play several games?” or, “do you watch movies offline often? Taking these kinds of questions into account is the right direction to choosing the right phone with the ideal amount of storage.

8GB is an entry level storage option that is ideal for those who use their phone for basic functionalities like phone, text and web browsing. If the 8GB smartphone has a microSD card slot, then there is a better chance of opting in for this storage - Luckily, handsets these days tend not to offer such low storage.

At the lower end of the storage scale,16GB is sufficient enough for some people. Bear in mind that you will need to clean up your phone regularly for any unused apps or files to create free space. Heavy multitasking and demanding games won’t manage with only 16GB of data, so you will need to limit yourself to smaller activities like web browsing, emails and WhatsApp. As mentioned above, if you purchase a handset with a microSD slot, then this amount of data may suffice.

32GB - 64GB

Moving up the scale, 32GB is a great amount of storage for many phone users and can store hold thousands of photos and a reasonable number of apps. 64GB is a good choice as it allows you to have enough space of apps, photos and other files without affecting the system. If you are a serious gamer then mobile games tend to take up quite a chunk of your storage, therefore gamers might consider 64GB at the minimum storage option.

128GB and higher

The higher the storage, the higher the price tag, so the 128GB and 256GB are usually found on higher end smartphones. These two options are ideal for those who take a lot of photos and enjoy filming everything they see - you won’t need to worry about running low on space with either of these. Most users seriously struggle to fill up 128GB and above.

Handsets such as the OnePlus 7, iPhone XR and Samsung Galaxy S10e are amongst the many mobile phones that offer 256GB of storage. And, if these numbers weren’t enough, in 2019 we were welcomed with an even higher amount of storage of 512GB. If money isn’t an issue and you’ll be using your phone for activities that will eat away at your storage, then 512GB might appeal to you.

Ultimately, there is no definitive answer. Depending on both your budget and phone use, you can then make the right decision on what storage option is best for you.
