Why is Plusnet Mobile closing?
As a subsidy of BT Group, Plusnet Mobile is being retired to make way for EE as the company’s flagship mobile network.
Existing Plusnet Mobile customers can switch to EE and benefit from exclusive deals; however, these are often tied to long-term contracts that won’t offer the same flexibility as before.
Plusnet’s broadband services won’t be affected by the closure, so customers can continue enjoying their home internet coverage as normal.
When will Plusnet Mobile close down?
There hasn’t yet been an official announcement about when Plusnet Mobile will close down, but BT Group have said customers will “be the first to know”.
In the meantime, you can keep using the network as normal, but sooner or later you will have to swap to a different provider.
Plusnet Mobile hasn’t revealed exactly how many customers will be impacted by the closure, or given a precise date as to when their SIMs will stop working.
As of 29th March 2023, Plusnet is no longer offering mobile services to new customers.
What happens if I don’t switch networks?
Because Plusnet Mobile only offers SIMs, these will stop working once the network closes.
This means that after the closure, you won’t be able to make calls, receive texts or go online with your Plusnet SIM anymore.
Also, unless you switch networks before the closure, your Plusnet Mobile number will automatically deactivate and you won’t be able to keep it. So, if you don’t want to memorise a new number, it’ll be better to swap to a new network as soon as you can.
Can I keep my phone number?
Yes you can! To keep your current Plusnet Mobile number, you’ll need to switch networks before the closure.
Switch easily by:
Requesting a PAC or STAC code
This is usually done via text. Please check with your chosen network provider about which number to message.
A PAC (Porting Authorisation Code) is for when you want to keep the same number; a STAC is when you want a new number.
Allowing plenty of time
You must give your PAC or STAC to your chosen provider within 30 days of receiving it. Transfers themselves are usually completed within a few hours, but it can take up to a day for the change to be fully applied.
If you decide to join Asda mobile, you can transfer your old number using My Account once you’ve received your PAC code.
Alternatively, call us from your new SIM on 2732 (from the UK) or 0808 006 2732 from any other phone (free of charge).
How do I switch to another network?
While you can keep using your Plusnet SIM and be billed as normal right up until the closure, we highly recommend switching networks ahead of time to avoid any disruption.
As a result of the closure, all Plusnet Mobile customers will be able to switch networks without incurring any financial penalties.
When you switch, your service will be cancelled and you’ll be told by Plusnet if you have any outstanding charges that need to be paid and the deadline for when you should pay them (if applicable).
To check your Plusnet account for any fees:
- Text INFO to 85075
- Call Plusnet on 500 for free from your Plusnet mobile number
- Call Plusnet on 0800 079 1133 from any other phone number
If you have an older handset, please remember that 3G shutdown is currently happening across all UK mobile networks. Consider upgrading your mobile phone when changing networks to avoid any future disruption.
