Since its first launch back in 1992, Mario Kart has always been a global sensation amongst all age groups. Following such success throughout the years, they have now taken things further with their mobile version. Nintendo first announced the free mobile version of Mario Kart Tour back at the beginning of 2018, and fans have been impatiently waiting since for this arrival!
What is the Mario Kart Tour game?
The UK welcomed the launch of this new games app in September 2019, and if you aren’t familiar with Mario Kart - it is a game where you simply work your way through different race courses, unlocking various features along the way. Nintendo have announced that the multiplayer option might be added to the game at some point in the future.
How do I play?
Playing this game is simple, you choose your favourite character (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, and Yoshi amongst many others). The karts automatically move forward, however you drag your finger on your phone screen from left to right in order to move your character in the desired direction. The most famous and beloved circuits are featured in the app, including the classic yet complex Rainbow Road.
Mario Kart will be the first game in the series to use real-world locations as inspiration for courses - Two courses for this that have been used are Tokyo and New York.
Nintendo have strategically used this mobile app to promote their other game launches. Luigi’s Mansion 3 is soon to be released on Nintendo Switch and so they have incorporated some spooky assets into the game.
How much does it cost?
It’s completely free to play on all iOS and Android devices, however there are options to purchase add-ons to the game. For example, you can unlock new characters, carts and items with coins which can be earned from playing but also purchased for real money.
There is also an option called the Gold Pass, which gives you a few in-game items and badges as you play, unlocking the faster racing 200cc mode - this feature costs £4.99 a month.
You can earn new characters just by playing the game, but if you want to unlock Rosalina instantly then the pack costs £19.99 and comes with 45 ruby gems and five-star tickets. Or, if you want to get the mighty Diddy Kong you will be looking at a higher price tag of £38.99, including 90 ruby gems and a quick ticket.
The characters are treated as a bonus, the ruby gems being the main reason for the high price as they are used to pay for a go on the Warp Pipe that releases random in-game prizes.
The additional purchases may not appeal to many users, so it’s great that it is entirely free for anybody to play on. So, if you are a Mario Kart fan, there is no excuse of not downloading!
