1. The Walking Dead

Based off of the original graphic novel – not the TV show – Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead is a terrifying, gut-wrenching interactive drama that pulls on your heartstrings, as well as forces you to hide behind the sofa. It’s split into chapters, meaning you can play each in a few hours, perhaps late in the evening under the covers after everybody else has gone to bed.

If you’re a fan of the weird, developer Simogo have crafted a magical and truly memorable experience for you here. This is a puzzle game that relies on you thinking well outside the box. The visual and sound design are real stand-outs here, creating an air of an old Scandinavian fairy tale that will give you nightmares for days!

OK, this has been a really popular one in the gaming community for months now, but it’s still one scary-as-hell iPhone game. The basic idea is to survive until dawn as waves of evil-looking mechanical creatures invade your room in an attempt to rip you apart. Not one for the weak of heart.

Don’t worry: ghosts aren’t real. Or are they? Indigo Lake by 3 Cubes Research is a good old-fashioned spooky ghost story told in first person. With plenty of adventuring and puzzling, this is a slow burn that will keep you going for hours.

This one conforms to the genre without deviation (survival horror set in appropriately horrific insane asylum). There are spooky flashbacks that give you details about the world and help you understand your character as you click your way through a chilling narrative that is sure to give you insomnia.
